Hi Everyone

A lot has happened in Myanmar and at our Development Centres since our last newsletter in December.

This is what you can find in this issue:

March 24 earthquake.

As you may already know, Myanmar experienced a large earth quake on March 24.  Thankfully the epicentre was a long way from where our children are located.

However just a few days before the quake, a number of our older children went to Tachileik for a series of youth meetings.

Fortunately none of our people were injured but these first hand photos show the extent of the damage.  Some of the pastors who we are involved with had their houses completely destroyed.

AYDC Dedication

We were excited to be part of the official opening of the Andrew Youth Development Centre while the team was there in January.

The kids had spent many weeks preparing songs and dances for this large community event.

It was an emotional and proud experience to see our kids who come from such disadvantaged backgrounds singing and dancing with joy, skill and humour.

You will love these short videos showing how well the kids performed.

2010/11 Trip a great success.

We took 23 people to Myanmar over December and January on our third MyKids Mission Trip.

The trip was a wonderful success. We gave away nearly 100 gift bags, ate dozens of watermelons and enjoyed the most incredible New Year's Eve party with the children, played games, made craft, did drama and much, much more.

The highlight for the kids is their annual trek to the Happy World water park.  Check out a short video of that here.

We have collated a number of our favourite photos from this visit.  They give an idea of the experiences you could have if you wish to join us on our next trip this December!

New kitchen and dining hall... half way there.

The AYDC badly needed a new kitchen and dining room.

So we were thrilled to see a new kitchen starting to take shape when we visited at Christmas time.

Progress has stalled however so any help you can give towards the completion of this project is greatly appreciated.

All the information to make a donation can be found here.  Our progress in meeting the various needs can be found here.

Thanks again for your support and interest in MyKids!

Kind regards
Andrew

Hi Everyone

Its only a few days until Christmas and so I thought you might enjoy this Singing Christmas Card we put together for our supporters.

While I was in Myanmar in October I recorded some footage of the kids wishing us a Merry Christmas.  It is quite sweet.

This year's team of 24 people head off to Yangon for two weeks on Boxing Day.  It is shaping up to be the best trip yet with some great activities planned for the kids.  You can follow what we are doing over there via our blog.

Many people have kindly donated gifts for us to take across.  These are going to be really well received!  We look forward to posting photos when we return.

Of course in a third world nation there are always needs.  To see an overview of how things are going with our projects please check the 'What is needed?' page.

Thanks again for your interest in MyKids!

Kind regards
Andrew

Hi Everyone

Firstly, my apologies if you do not want to recieve this email.  Our email list addresses were not transferred perfectly from an old server to the new one.  You can unsubscribe very easily by clicking the link at the bottom of this email.

This is what you can find in this newsletter:

Making good progress.

We have now almost completed the second dormitory and have begun work on a building to replace the old kitchen and dining tarpaulin.  Check out the latest photos of the dormitory here.

Our annual trek to Myanmar

This year we have 24 people travelling to Myanmar on Boxing Day.  The kids are really excited about seeing us again.

When we are there we take them out to places they only get to visit once a year.  Last year it was the zoo and the water park.

It is hard to describe just how much the kids enjoy this.  The photo to the right helps a little.

Perhaps you would like to join us on our next trip.  Shoot me an This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to register your interest.

Christmas presents for kids who really need them.

One of the great joys of visiting the kids at Christmas time is giving them a Christams bag of gifts.  Jesus was right - it really is more fun to give than to receive.

OK, the gifts we give them are not what Aussie kids would find real exciting - thongs, pencils, school books, underwear and McDonalds toys.

But these kids think they are great.  Check out the happy faces after last year's Christmas present delivery.  Click here if you would like to contribute to this year's Christmas presents.   We have 85 kids to buy for this time round!

Cooking for 100 people.

85 kids plus staff is a lot of people to cook for.  That is what Ruben has to do twice daily.

What makes this much, much harder is that he is essentially doing that cooking over a camp fire!  (Check out photos and video here)  There is no running water, no stove tops, no rice cookers.  Just an open fire in a leaky bamboo hut.

While I was there I asked Ruben what he needed for the kitchen.  He was reluctant to say anything.  Then finally he asked through my interpreter, 'Is it ok to ask for a whole new kitchen?'

Any help you can give towards this final stage of this project is greatly appreciated.  All the information to make a donation can be found here.

Thanks again for your your interest in MyKids!

Kind regards
Andrew

The second dormitory is nearly complete.

Hi Everyone

It has been a while since I have sent  out an email to everyone about what has been happening with MyKids.  There has been plenty going on!  And fortunately people’s generosity has vastly exceeded my ability to communicate what has been happening in Myanmar!  Here are the highlights:

New Dormitory is now complete… almost.

The second dormitory at the Andrew Orphanage is now almost complete.  This is in spite of us not having completely paid for it!  The local builder, Cin Khan Lian, is a committed Christian and so has built the dormitory using his own money and based on a promise that we would pay him back.  I am humbled every time I think about his generosity (and trust!)

The number of kids in our care has almost doubled.

Because the new dormitory is now able to be used (although the bare concrete floors are not ideal to sleep on L), we have had a significant increase in the number of kids in our care.  In January there were about 50 kids.  Now we have almost 90 kids - and 10 staff to care for them all.

New Website Now Launched with lots of photos of the sponsored kids.

I have just finished building our new website (visit www.MyanmarKids.org).  There is still more to be added to it but I have managed to get the most important thing added – a page for most of our sponsored kids.  There will be more pages coming for the kids who we would like to get sponsors for.  These pages have a hundreds of additional photos and some delightful video letters that the kids sent via Sandar (see below).

Woohoo, child sponsorship is now tax deductible.

We can now offer people tax-deductible status for donations towards child sponsorship.  Previously we were only able to get tax-deductibility for donations towards buildings and business development.  But out partner Global Development Group has now extended this for general donations towards day-to-day needs including child sponsorship.  This is great news since providing for 90 kids does cost a few dollars.  If you would like to make a one off donation or  sponsor a child please email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  We have calculated that the actual costs to provide the essentials for the kids is $40 per month.

Easter visit by Sandar Tun.

Over Easter we had Sandar Tun visit us here in Oz.  Sandar interprets for us when we visit Yangon.  She spoke at three churches and visited a fourth on the Sunshine Coast.  We had a wonderful response from people during her visit with the number of kids sponsored doubling to almost 40.  A big thank you to those people who looked after Sandar over those three weeks!

Last chance this year to make a tax-deductible donation.

Of course, the arrival of this email just a day before the end of the financial year is not coincidence J   Many people can get 30% or more of their donation back on their tax return if the donation is made today.  You can do that real easily online using your credit card – just visit our donation page.

Well, I am going to try and be a little more regular in my correspondence over the coming months.  We have got lots of stuff happening so I will do my best to keep you informed on what’s unfolding.  Thanks again for your support and interest!

God bless
Andrew
