The MyKids website was established in 2008 as a vehicle to further promote our existing work in Myanmar. This work has been supported for over a decade by various Apostolic churches in the South Pacific.
In 1996 Pastor Lian (who heads up our orphanage work in Myanmar) visited Australia. This meeting resulted in a small team from Bayside Christian Family Church visiting Lian later in the year with a particular focus on the Kuhn people in Kyaing Teng.
Further visits in 1998 and 2000 solidified our involvement with Lian and introduced us to the great needs of the orphans for which Lian was caring.
A small orphanage building (similar to the one pictured) made in traditional Burmese style with bamboo frame and thatched roof and floor already existed. The orphanage (Andrew Orphanage) was named after a Singaporean who donated the initial money to get it started.
In 2002, BCFC with additional help from other churches raised funds to replace the bamboo orphanage with a completely new building. The new building was an enormous improvement on the existing one. It was built to standards which are comparable to that of the West. This orphanage now accommodates over 50 orphans and several families.
A second plot of land was purchased in a rural area with some of the children relocated there. This orphanage is the one pictured and provides care for about 30 children.
In 2007 more land was purchased at this second site in preparation for the new orphanage buildings that will be constructed over the next three years. On completion of that work, all the children will be relocated from the first orphanage thus making way for increased micro-business opportunities to help the Development Centres reach a self sustaining level.
Teams from various churches have continued to visit the work in Myanmar. These visits allow us to take the children gifts, encourage the dedicated workers and to fuel the vision to see the work expanded.
