Below are some very short lessons on how to say common phrases in Burmese.

  • Hello
    (min-ga-la-bah)
  • Hello (said very politely - its not used very much in general conversation)
    (min-ga-la-bah come-yah OR min-ga-la-bah shin )
  • Goodbye
    (tat-tar)
  • Thank you (the common way of saying it)
    (chay-zoo-tin-bah-dey)
  • Thanks (like 'ta' in English')
    (chay-zoo-bear.  Young people also shorten it further to just 'chay-zoo')
  • OK
    (hya-bah-dey)
  • Yes
    (ho-geh)
  • Yes (said very politely)
    (ho-geh-come-yah OR ho-geh-shin)
  • No
    (ma-hoe-poo)
  • How are you?
    (ney-gown-lah)
  • I am good
    (nee-gown-bah-deh)
  • You did very well
    (a-zhen gown-dey.   a-zhen=very)
  • You are very smart
    (a-zhen daw-deh)
  • 'Great' (a bit like well done!)
    (gown-day)
  • That is good
  • You are beautiful (for the girls)

  • 'Very' (a useful word to use in conjunction with other phrases)

Below are the Burmese to English transliteration:

  • Hello = min-ga-la-bah
